[Class 37.] Metering apparatus for a two-part tariff system comprises one or two meters with a single tapped winding or separate current windings, and a relay energized in the low rate circuit and making contacts to the metering field coil or coils so that low loads on the low rate circuit are charged at the high rate, the normal high rate registration being effected simultaneously with the normal low rate and with the extra low load on the low rate circuit. The relay may comprise a moving armature type instrument responsive to the load current, or a saturated current transformer, or a variable ratio transformer with tapping may be employed to feed the relay. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the meter current coils 5, 5<a> in the different load circuits are connected so that when the arm 14 of relay 9 bridges contacts 18, 19, a resistance 20 is shunted across the coil 5<a >and normal registration on the low rate circuit 3, 8 occurs. A light load on the power circuit however removes the resistance shunt and high rate registration together with the normal high rate supply is effected.
