Abstract

4 : 4<1> - Dihydroxy - 3 : 3<1> - dimethyldiphenylmethane is prepared by condensing 1 : 3 : 2-xylenol with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda. b : b - Bis (4 - hydroxy - 3 : 5 - dimethyl-phenyl)-propane is prepared by condensing 1 : 3 : 2-xylenol with acetone in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid. These compounds are used as anti-agers for rubber.ALSO:The ageing of rubber is retarded without causing any deterioration in the colour of the vulcanisate by the addition to the mix of a bis (hydroxyphenyl) methane substituted in at least two positions, one ortho to each hydroxyl group, such substituents being preferably methyl groups. One or both of the methylene hydrogen atoms may also be substituted, such as for example by the same or different straight chain hydrocarbon residues. Compounds mentioned are 4 : 41-dihydroxy-3 : 31-dimethyldiphenyl-methane. 4 : 41-dihydroxy - 3 : 31 : 5 : 51 - tetramethyl - diphenyl methane, prepared by condensing two molecules of 1 : 3 : 2 - xylenol with formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda. b : b bis (4 - hydroxy-3 : 5-dimethylphenyl) propane. b : b bis (4-hydroxy - 3 : 5 - dimethylphenyl) propane, prepared by condensing 1 : 3 : 2 xylenol with acetone in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid.
