Emulsions, making. - Water-soluble products useful as emulsifying agents are obtained by condensing aromatic oxvalcohols or their derivatives with aromatic sulphonic acids or derivatives thereof other than oxy-derivatives. The aromatic oxyalcohols may be replaced in part by other compounds such as other alcohols, phenols, or compounds with exchangeable halogen atoms such as benzyl chloride or dichloronaphthalene dihydride, such additional compounds being added to the reaction mixture at any suitable stage. The aromatic sulphonic acids may be compounds of high molecular weight, such as are obtained by condensing aromatic sulphonic acids with aldehydes, sulphur chloride, or thionyl chloride. Alternatively, hydrocarbons or their derivatives or condensation products of high molecular weight may replace the sulphonic acids, the products being rendered water-soluble for example by sulphonation or condensation with benzyl chloride sulphochlorides. In any event, the products may be subjected to further condensation, for instance with aldehydes or sulphuryl chloride.
