412,962. Power-generating systems. SENTINEL WAGGON WORKS, Ltd., Iddesleigh House, Caxton Street, Tothill Street, London, and DOBLE, A., Alta Vista, Ridgebourne Road, Shrewsbury. Jan. 3, 1933, No. 187. [Classes 110 (iii) and 122 (iii).] In a steam power system described in connection with a road vehicle, an auxiliary steam engine or turbine 3 which may receive a portion or the whole of the main-engine exhaust and which drives the feed pump 9, draught blower 7 and other auxiliary units, is geared to the shaft of the main steam engine 2 by a unidirectional coupling 16 which is so arranged as to enable the shaft of the auxiliary engine to be driven by the shaft of the main engine or to overrun it so that it may be driven when the main engine is idle. The auxiliary units may be driven solely by the main engine or by the auxiliary engine, or by both. The engine 3 may be driven by steam from pipes 28, 29, 30. The pipe 29 is connected to the main-engine supply between the valve 26 and the engine 2. The pipe 28 is connected to an intermediate or low-pressure receiver or to the exhaust. Both pipes contain check valves 31, 32. A pipe 30 connected to the boiler may supply steam through a control valve 33. When the valve 33 is closed, the auxiliary steam supply depends upon the speed and/or load of the main engine. The engine 3 also operates a fan 5 arranged behind the condenser 4, an air pump 6, and a dynamo 10 which may function as a motor to drive the pump 9. A starting engine 8 is secured to the shaft of the blower, the drive from the engine 3 being effected through a free-wheel coupling 21. The compound or multiple-expansion engine 2 may be replaced by a single-expansion engine, the exhaust from which would pass directly to the engine 3, which in this case may be a turbine. The auxiliary exhaust 34 would lead directly to the condenser.
