Abstract

412,354. Radiators for cooling oil &c. COUMBE, W. E., 26, Stoney Stanton Road, Coventry. March 10, 1933, Nos. 7264 /33 and 1072/34. [Classes 29 and 64 (iii).] A heat-exchanger or radiator applicable for cooling the lubricant of an internal-combustion engine comprises a pair of tubes arranged one within the other, a helical or other baffle provided within the annular space, and a spring-controlled byepass connecting the inlet and outlet. A wire 13 may be coiled about the inner tube 4, or the tubes themselves may be fluted ; or the inner tube may be provided with holes 14 through which a wire 15 is laced and wound externally to lie intermittently over the surface. Two pairs of concentric tubes 3, 4 may be connected in series, and the annular space 5 is closed at the ends by caps 6 provided with connections 7 to allow of the flow of oil. The radiator is mounted on a vehicle so that a current of air passes through the bores of the inner tubes and over the surfaces of the outer tubes. The byepass 11 connects the inlet with the outlet, and is closed by a spring-pressed valve 12. In a modification, a single element radiator is fitted with a cylindrical wire-gauze filter to act as a baffle.
