Abstract
412,263. Batteries. BAMBER, C. K., 9, Victoria Street, London. Dec. 23, 1932, No. 36469. [Class 53.] A battery of the Leclanche type is provided with a lid which is made of rubber reinforced with an internal metal plate. The lid is provided with two apertures 7, 8 for receiving the electrodes which are carried by the lid, the corresponding apertures in the reinforcing plate being lined with rubber to prevent any part of the plate from being exposed. The plate may be of steel and may be perforated as shown at 17 in Fig. 2. The lid is positioned in the jar by means of a flange 5 which may be reinforced by tongues, lugs or other protuberances pressed out of the metal plate. Instead of the flange 5 a number of depending lugs may be used for positioning the lid. The reinforcing plate may be situated nearer to the top surface of the lid than the lower surface, and the part of the lid which rests on the jar may be of softer rubber than the rest of the lid. The reinforcing plate may be slightly domed. The zinc electrode 3 which may partly surround the carbon electrode 2 is carried by an insulated wire 14 held by a rubber stopper 16. The latter is made in halves and each half is provided with a recess 16<a> as shown in Fig. 8. When the halves are placed together the recesses 16<a> form a passage closed at the top by two thin tongues 16b. Tongues similar to the tongues 16b may also be provided at the bottom of the recesses 16<a>. The tongues may be omitted altogether in which case the two halves of the plug grip the wire 14 throughout the length of the plug.
