[Class 7 (ii).] In a welded frame, longitudinal members a formed from rolled-steel plate, steel tube, or the rolled-steel sections commonly used in structural ironwork, are welded to the main elements of the structure by welds which are arranged in the longitudinal direction so as to be free from tensional stress. Pieces b, d, of angle iron, carrying the load, and webs n, o are thus welded to the members a, the pieces b, d being previously bolted or riveted at c, e. The main bearings are carried on straps k which are welded, with cleats g to pieces of steel plate forming the webs of girder-like members, the load being thus carried through the cleats g and pieces m of angle iron to the foundations. If the longitudinal members are of steel tube, they are internally screw-threaded at each end to take the cylinder retaining studs and the studs holding the lower halves of the main bearings. In Fig. 4, the longitudinal members comprise crutch plates W which are welded to side plates V, V<1> and to flanged feet X by flanges Z passing through slots in the plates W, stresses due to lateral deflection of the feet being thus accommodated.
