Abstract
279,398. Ferguson, G. Oct. 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Frames.-The frames of double-acting engines are provided with inner, supporting, compression members between the cylinders and crankshaft bearings, while tensile stresses are carried by the' external portions of the frames. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the compression members comprise ribs 7, members 8 between the ribs and the bearing cap 6, and members 9 between the bearing and the bottom of the bed-plate. In a modification of this construction, long tie rods connect the cylinder and bed-plate, and the ribs 7 are inclined. In the construction shown in Fig. S, an intermediate member 14 is placed between the members 8 and the framing 12 beneath the ribs. A construction with adjustment means is shown in Fig. 5, the member 15 has a screw-andnut adjustment, and the members 16 and cap 6 have interengaging curved surfaces 17, 18. The struts 20, 21 may be adjustable. In a further modification, adjustable studs in the framing 12 engage an intermediate member above the bearing-cap. In a further modification, adjustable wedges are arranged between the cap and an intermediate member engaging the framing 12.
