[Class 94 (i).] Articles A or batches of articles such as cigarettes are fed to position II, from which they are to be fed transversely. In order to avoid damage owing to contact with the succeeding batch at position I, this batch is retracted slightly during the transverse feed. The retraction is effected by a metal plate or felt pad 11 pivoted at 13 to a bracket 12 which is pivoted at 14 to an oscillatable arm 8. A spring 15 holds the plate in its operative position, and, on the descent of the arm 8, the plate takes up the position shown in broken lines and moves the batch slightly backwards. In a modified construction, a brush is mounted at an incline on the arm 8, and the top and bottom of the article may be engaged. In another form, mechanically operated grippers may be projected through guides between which the articles are being fed, and to move them backwardly.
