Abstract

411,862. Drawing and spinning fibrous materials. BARKER, A. F., 2, Shireoak Dene, Shireoak Road, Headingley, and BINKS, C. C., 5, Bewerley Street, Dewsbury Road, both in Leeds. Dec. 9, 1932, No. 34939. [Class 120 (ii).] Cotton, wool, and like fibrous material is formed into twisted sliver, roving or spun yarn by rotation of a free end of the material, the sliver being built up from successive tufts detached from the original material, which may be in the form of slightly twisted sliver, as in English or cone worsted drawing or mule roving, or untwisted sliver as in French drawing. The twisted material is wound on to a double-flanged bobbin, cop, spool or paper tube. Two single threads may be delivered by a pair of delivery rollers or by a trap roller to ring twisting-apparatus. As shown in Fig. 1, the material is fed by rollers a, a<1> to a nip roller c' co-operating with a roller c, Figs. 3<a>, 4 which constitutes the twisting means, and is wound by drum winding-means e. The roller c is provided with a leather, rubber, brass or other surface f and an aperture g, and draws the fibres from the rollers a, a' in the form of tufts, which are carried through the aperture g and a stationary or rotary nozzle h, and are led directly or through a right-angled path to the winding-means. The material is thus built up in the form of tufts and twisted to a degree determined by the ratio of the rotation of the roller c and winding-means. The nozzle h is rotated if false twist is desired to ensure a more regular sliver, roving or thread and to prevent breakage in the case of a softspun sliver, the driving being conveniently effected by a belt l. To ensure more effective tufting the rollers a, a<1> may be intermittently rotated by ratchet mechanism so that delivery of the material is correctly related to the position of the surface f of the roller c. The aperture g may be formed non-centrally on the roller c so that the sliver tends to move spirally on the roller. Rollers b, rotating in a trough containing water, oil, rice-flour, or other substance, may be provided to condition the material and to prevent disturbance due to electrification of the fibres. Further to control the fibres when treating long wool, hair, jute and the like, a preliminary tufting-roller rotating at an intermediate speed may be interposed between the rollers a, a<1>, c, c', and a tube d of glass, brass, or vulcanite may be provided. The roller e may be of ebonite in the case of cotton which is not easily charged electrically, but in the case of wool it is preferably of metal, for example iron, brass or aluminium.
