Abstract
<PICT:0411807/III/1> <PICT:0411807/III/2> <PICT:0411807/III/3> The exhaust is purified either by electric and catalytic action or by electric action. In one form the gases first pass through four tubes 4, Fig. 1, in series, wherein they are subjected to electrostatic action to filter the gases and condense any vapour. They then pass through four tubes 8 containing catalysers; heated air is admitted to the gases while in the pipes 4 and the action of the catalysers converts carbon monoxide to dioxide. The tubes may be heated by exhaust jackets. All the tubes have sludge outlets 13. In modifications concentric tubes may be used for the catalysers and electric filters. Small asbestos cylinders 115<a> 115<b>, Fig. 12 carrying the catalysts are mounted in concentric tubes 109, 110, 115 to which the gases flow after electric filtering. This is effected by discharge obtained between a central electrode 6, Fig. 14, and a dividing wall 123 which are connected to an electric source and outer walls, the walls 121, 123 and 124 having pointed projections 130 to promote the electric charging. The gases may be purified by electric action only in which case only tubes such as the tubes 4 are used. Electricity may be supplied by a magneto or by a coil and battery. A distributer may be used to serve the tubes in turn. Catalysts.--These may be in the form of rings 15 of steatite impregnated with one or more of manganese dioxide, cupric oxide or silver oxide, or they may be formed of perforated plates, gratings or cylinders made of asbestos. The fibre with the catalyst and powdered pumice or steatite is made into a pulp from which any form may be moulded. Alkali silicates or silicic esters may be used as binding media for the catalysts. Before use and to fix the catalysts on their mounts, the silica compositions are treated with CO2 and thereafter with water; or they are warmed.
