Abstract
Tungsten or other buttons forming the targets of X-ray tubes are aged to render them capable of withstanding electronic or ionic bombardment without cracking, by subjecting the tube before use, with the button mounted therein, to successive discharges at progressively increasing energies with intermediate cooling of the tube, the energy of the initial discharge being less than, and preferably approximately half of, the energy the tube is designed to withstand in normal operation. The energy of the final discharge may equal or exceed the normal energy. The treatment may be applied during or after exhaustion of the tube and produces a slow crystallization of the button Mechanical working of the tungsten to a fibrous grain structure before manufacture of the tube is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the general treatment of metals and vacuum-tube electrodes by the discharge process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
