Abstract

411,176. Skid brakes. BORJYNSKY, T. M. VON, 32, Rue de Boulainvilliers, Paris. Dec. 7, 1932, No. 34662. [Class 103 (i).] In a vehicle brake comprising a brake shoe adapted to be lowered into engagement between the wheel and the track power-actuated means for raising the shoe is provided. The power means may be an electric motor or the running axle of the vehicle and may be automatically rendered inoperative when the shoe has been raised to a predetermined position. In Figs. 1, 3 and 3<a>, the shoe 1 is mounted upon an arm 2 pivoted upon the wheel axle 7 and is retained in the raised position by a spring catch 27, 28 of which the element 27 is pivoted on a fixed bracket 20 and carries the armature of a magnet 23. The hub 6 of the arm 2 forms one member of a ball ratchet-clutch the other member 10 of which is slidably keyed on the axle 7. The balls 9 are normally out of alignment with the projections 8 so that the clutch is inoperative in both directions of rotation of the axle. By momentarily energizing the magnet 23, the shoe 1 drops into operative position and the movement of the catch member 27 towards the bracket 20 effected by the spring 24, after disengagement of the shoe, slides the clutch member 10 through connections 17 and the fork 13 to bring the balls 9 into the effective position shown in Fig. 3<a>. Upon reversing the movement of the vehicle the axle then raises the shoe until the outward movement of the catch member 27 as it is engaged by the member 28 returns the clutch 10 to the inoperative position. In another arrangement, Fig. 5, the shoe 1 is raised by a cable 29 winding on a drum 30 geared to an electric motor 33, the circuit of which includes, in addition to the hand switch 37, a switch 39, 40, the member 40 of which slides in brackets 43, 45. The shoe may be retained in the raised position by a detent which can be released to allow the shoe to fall and it is raised upon closing the switch 37 until a projection 50 on the drum 30 engages a rod 47 contacting a projection 45 on the switch member 40 which is thus moved to break the circuit. Specification 411,175 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 15435/90, 13863/91, 15362/92, [all in Class 108], and 17800/07, [Class 103].
