Abstract

285,231. Fazekas, L. Jan. 20, 1927. Controlling independently of drivers; brakes; signalling.-An emergency braking and signalling device controlled by the passengers simultaneously operates audible and visible signals, breaks the motor ignition circuit, and releases an automatic braking device which, by means of power derived either from a rotating part of the vehicles or a spring, electric or other motor, operates the ordinary vehicle brakes intermittently and to an increasing extent. The engine being switched off also acts as a. brake. In the construction shown, a hand lever 22 in the passengers' compartment. when moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, (1) interrupts the ignition circuit 33 at 34, (2) closes parallel circuits from a battery 25 to an electric horn 26 and a signal lamp 27, at the same time lowering the lamp from within a casing 35 to a conspicuous position, and (3) rotates a detent 15 thereby permitting a push rod 14 to fall so that a catch 18 thereon is engaged by a cam 19 on the rear axle of the vehicle. The rod 14 is carried by an arm 13 controlled by a tension spring 13<1> and mounted with a small amount of lost motion on one of the brake shafts 5, so that the rod is oscillated backwards and forwards by the joint action of the cam and the spring and thereby applies the brakes intermittently. A similar lost-motion device is provided between the brake.lever-4 and its shaft 3 so that the brakes can be applied by the rod 14 without moving this lever, and a third lost-motion device is provided between one of the brake arms 8 and the shaft 5, while a double linkage 6, 7, 8 and 6<1>, 7<1>, 8<1> is employed between the shafts 3, 5, the members 6, 6<1> being tension members only. The rod 14 contains a spring buffer and is not pivoted to the arm 13 but is connected thereto by a spring pawl (not shown) so arranged that at each stroke of the rod the pawl, and therefore the corresponding end of the rod, rises on the arm 13 ; as the rod is reciprocated through a fixed distance it rocks the arm 13 through a greater angle at each stroke and thereby applies the brakes to a greater extent.
