Abstract

410,571. Shoe making. POCHIN, H. S., and DOVE, G. H., Standard Works, Eving- ton Valley Road, Leicester. Feb. 7, 1933, No. 3747. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii).] Connecting uppers to soles; sole-laying.-In the manufacture of shoes having their soles secured by cement, cellulose cement is applied to the lasted upper and/or the sole and allowed to dry out, and the lasted section of the upper is heated prior to the application of the solvent. A suitable apparatus for heating the upper comprises a table in parts a<1>, a<2> hinged together to allow of adjustment to suit the shape of the shoe bottom, clamping nuts f securing the parts in adjusted position. Electric heaters d are provided, and the inner edge of the table may be upturned to prevent the work projecting over its edge. The table may be covered by asbestos sheets, overlapping at the hinges. A hood k localizes the heat. In a modification, heaters are arranged in a box-like structure having a metal top shaped to conform to the average longitudinal contour of a lasted shoe.
