Abstract
1,027,043. Making shoes. BRITISH BOOT, SHOE & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 28, 1962 [Oct. 6, 1961; Jan. 16, 1962], Nos. 35986/61 and 1506/62. Heading A3B. An improved Set and Shape retention in a shoe upper is obtained by introducing moisture into substantially the whole of the upper whilst it is still on the last and before or after it has been subjected to an elevated temperature under drying conditions. The lasted uppers are plated in a hot moist atmosphere or sprayed, sponged or dipped in water which may contain wetting agents. Either before or after this moistening treatment the uppers may be heated e.g. using hot air and/or radiant heat. Conventional mulling may precede lasting and the after-lasting heating before slipping preferably comprises a force-drying step. Lasted uppers of medium weight leather are placed in a saturated atmosphere at about 70‹C for up to 5 minutes and then transferred to a hot air dryer at a similar temperature for 2 to 10 minutes. After cooling to room temperature the uppers are slipped from their lasts. The moistening of the uppers may take place with or without soles, fabric linings, or moulded non-leather stiffeners attached to them.
