Abstract

447,746. Boot - making machines. DODGE, M. L., 211, High Street, Newburyport, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Sept. 22, 1934, No. 27298. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1933. [Class 17 (i)] Treeing and ironing.-An apparatus for finishing a shoe around the foot-opening comprises a heated form engaging the lining and a co-operating presser to engage the outside of the upper at its edge with a component of pressure directed towards the edge to form an inward curve and cause the top margin of the upper to project over the top margin of the lining. The apparatus may be used on the upper before assembly. Three forms are described, one for treating the heel end, one for the side portions and one for the front of the instep, the latter slightly lifting the forward edge. A table 1 carries a number of brackets 14 each carrying an appropriate form 15 heated by an electric resistance. Co-operating with the form are a pair of presser members 30 of complementary shape to the form, covered by a layer of rubber 51 and a light leather facing 52 carried on levers pivoted at 32 and actuated by toggle links 35 operated by a handle 46. The joints at the outer ends of the toggle links are adjustable, the links being slotted and provided with a screw 82 to abut against the end of the lever. A gauge 90 for the edge of the upper is carried by the form. The form 112 for the front of the instep is concave to give a " lift " to the edge of the upper. It co-operates with a presser 120, having a yielding facing, on a lever so pivoted that the presser has a component of motion towards the top of the shoe. Supporting shims or wedges 115 may be arranged between the form and the shoe bottom. The heel end form 131 co-operates with a presser member 137 pivoted to a lug 135 on an operating handle 133, the presser being urged toward the form by a spring 138 to a limit determined by an adjustable stop member 141.
