Abstract

541,810. Methods of making shoes; moulding uppers. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 11, 1940, No. 10141. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] An insole has a shouldered recess or is skived all round its periphery, and an upper has its toe end and heel portions inwardly flanged and the whole margin cemented to the recess, all without the insertion of a last. The insole may be built up of two laminations of similar shape, the upper laminations being smaller. The rear portion of the upper is shaped in a machine comprising an inner mould 421 slidable rearwardly and upwardly into a pair of outer moulds urged inwardly by springs 172 and loosely pivoted at 166 to carriers having fixed pivots 174, the carriers being closed in the upper by toggle links and a cam-actuated slide. Gauges 144 carried by bellcrank levers 146 determine the amount of upper margin projecting above the inner mould, these gauges being moved to out-of-the-way position by pins 154 on the advance of the slide. The upper is tensioned by side and toe-end grippers, the side grippers 74, 621 being mounted on slides 64 guided at a steeper angle than the slides actuating the moulds. Hand-actuated toggle links 90 close the grippers on the upper, and springs 118, 120 urge the grippers forwardly so that the upper is tensioned as the inner mould moves rearwardly. The toe-end grippers 92, 100 are closed by a handle 110 secured to an eccentric 108. The projecting margin is inturned by a V-shaped notch in a cam-actuated slide 56. In the rear of this slide is a slide at right angles thereto actuating a flange-former 230 which is depressed by a cam-actuated lever 260, a concavity 226 in the inner mould allowing the former to over-mould the flange. The instep of the upper is stretched by a mould 268 having a convex operating surface and carried by a lever 270 urged upwardly by a spring 276 and moved downwardly, to stretch the upper by a roll carried by a cam-actuated slide 278, The toe-end of the upper is marginally flanged by a wiping member 336 actuated by toggle links 344 connected to a treadle, the upper being positioned over a moulding block 330, with the aid of a gauge 370. Connected to the same treadle is a presser 368, complete depression of the treadle, after wiping is complete and the exposed margin of the upper has been cemented, serving to press the insole to the cemented margin. The adjacent edges of upper and smaller lamination are then reinforced by zigzag stitching and the outsole is applied and secured by two rows of stitches, one passing through the recessed portion of the insole and the other outside the same.
