Abstract

The solubility of cellulose derivatives or near conversion products of cellulose insoluble in water or aqueous caustic soda solution at ordinary temperatures, but which can be brought into solution in aqueous caustic soda by cooling below 0 DEG C. until crystals of ice appear, and subsequently allowing the mixture to warm to atmospheric temperature, is increased by mixing the cellulose body, aqueous caustic soda, and a small quantity of a colloid substance or dispersing agent, preferably with high speed stirring. Cellulose bodies which may be treated in this manner are the hydroxy-alkyl and methyl ethers of cellulose, and also the esters, for example, the sulphates, nitrates, and phosphates, containing a low percentage of the ester group. Colloids or dispersing agents which can be used include alkyl aryl sulphonates, mineral oil sulphonates, aromatic sulphonic acids and salts thereof, monobenzyl alkaline sulphanilates, sulphite cellulose lye, alkali soluble cellulose, water- and alkali-soluble cellulose derivatives, condensation products of formaldehyde and naphthalene sulphonic acids, sulphonated fatty oils, sulphonated fish oils, prestabit oil, gelatine, glue, pastes or solutions of starch and starch-like substances, gums, turkey red oils, and alkylated polynuclear sulphonic acids and their soluble salts. The solutions made according to the invention may be filtered and used by the known methods for the manufacture of films, artificial threads, artificial horse-hair, cloth fillings, textile finishes, and the like. Examples are given. Specification 410,153 is referred to.
