[Class 60.] A machine for polishing shoe heels comprises an endless travelling band 27 guided to carry the heels 26 around a portion of the peripheries of polishing discs 8, the heels being oscillated during their passage. The machine comprises a work table 1 carrying brackets 2 in which are journalled shafts 4 supported by a bracket 3 and driven by belt gearing 20, 22, 23, and connected by universal joints 5 to the upper end of each shaft 4 is a stub shaft 6 carrying a polishing- disc 8. Each shaft 6 is supported in a bearing 13 in a lever 12 pivoted, at the level of the joint 5, to a bracket 11, which is adjustable vertically by a screw 10 ; the lever 12 is moved about its pivot, to adjust the disc 8 angularly, by a draw rod 14 engaging a screwed boss of a handwheel. The band 27 consists of links 28 and pins 29 forming a chain, and is guided by means of rollers 32 on the pins 29 moving in channel-shaped guides 30. Each alternate pin 29 carries two arms, an adjustable arm 33 and a fixed arm 34, the arm 33 carrying a pointed screw 36 to grip a heel 26, and the arm 34 carrying a jaw 38 having two heel-engaging pins 37. The jaw 38 has thereon a pawl 39, which, as the band travels, engages spaced studs 40 on the guide 30, thereby oscillating the heel whilst in contact with the disc 8 ; return oscillation is imparted to the heel by the disc 8 when the pawl leaves the stud 40. The discs 8 may be set to different heights and inclinations so that the whole surface of the heel is treated.
