Affixing tape.-A machine suitable for applying adhesive tape to the back seams of boot or shoe uppers while the seam is on the inside of the workpiece comprises devices, including a roll, between which the workpiece is fed with the seam facing the roll, the tape being fed between the workpiece and the roll. In the form shewn in Fig. 5, both devices are in the form of rolls, one roll 17, having a transversely convex periphery, being driven from a shaft 32 through a worm and reduction gear on shafts 29, 25, and being provided with a cover 55. The other roll 35, the periphery of which is concave, is carried by arms 37 connected with a spring-influenced spindle 42 pivotally supported by a pin 44, and adjustable to and from the roll 17 by a screwed head 48; the pressure on the spring 47 can be varied by adjusting a sleeve 43 surrounding the spindle 42. The arms 37 are mounted on an eccentric which is carried on a shaft 39 and is rotated by a pulley 40; by these means a vibratory motion is imparted to the roll 35. A transverse pin 60 is carried by an arm 71 adjustably mounted, under the influence of a spring, on an arm 73, the other end of which is connected, by a link 77, with a pedal, the operation of which raises the pin 60, a stud 78 on the arm 73 simultaneously effecting the raising of the arms 37 carrying the roll 35. The pin 60 presses on the upper side of the work, as shown in Fig. 8, and squeezes it against a bridge piece 57, which is carried by the cover 55, and under which the tape is led, adhesive side upwards, from a supply roll on the machine frame. The cover 55 is furnished with a groove to guide the tape, and the bridge piece 57 with a notch to take the upturned seam. In another form, an endless band, passing over pulleys with concave peripheries, is used to press the workpiece and tape together. Part of the length of the band is in contact with a pulley having a convex periphery; a pressure roll may be provided at this point. Specifications 272,183, 297,349 and 318,907 are referred to.
