This invention relates to cementing ma: chines and is herein illustrated in a cementing machine having a work supporting de vice positioned below a cement applying device.
It is common in many types of cementing machines, and especially in machines used for cementing shoe parts, to apply the cement by means of a driven roll positioned: over the work and to hold the work in contact with the cement applying roll by means of a work supporting roll positioned below the work and directly underneath the cement applying roll. In such machines difliculty is sometimes experienced, especially when light cements of a considerable degree of fluidity are employed, because the cement is apt to drip from the cement applying roll and, being caught by the work supporting roll, to be accidentally applied to the work, smooching the same. This detrimental result is frequently the result of carelessness upon the part of the operative who leaves the machine running without shutting off the supply of cement so that, even though the machine operates perfectly without dripping when pieces of work are being, passed through the machine at frequent intervals, the machine may not be able to take care of the cement upon the applying roll when left running for a substantial period of time without the presentation of a piece of work.
An object of the invention, accordingly,
is to provide an improved cementing machine having a displaceable guard for pro tecting the work of the machine.
As herein illustrated and in accordance with features of the invention, the guard comprises a fixed annular portion sugrounding a large fraction of the under side of a work supporting roll and a movable portion mounted on a pivot arm and adapted to be interposed between the applying and supporting rolls to supplement the fixed portion of the guard so as to catch any cement which drips from the cement applying device.

Although it will be evident that the novel guard can be applied to various types of machines, it is herein illustrated as applied to a machine of the type shown in an application of John W. Cosgrove, deceased, Serial No. 259,537, filed March 6, 1928, to which reference may be had for a description of parts of the machine not herein fully shown or described. The machine comprises a displaceable guard plate 10 positioned between a driven cement applying roll 12 supported in fixed hearings in a frame member 14 and a work supporting roll 16 mounted on the end of a shaft 17 which is j ournaled in a movable. arm 18 so that the work supporting roll may be dropped'to allow the insertion of a piece of work 20 and then raised to grip the work; (Fi between the cement applying roll and t e Work supporting roll. On this arm 18 is mounted an adjustable gage support 22 carrying an edge gage 26. adjustable thereon. Secured to the gage support 22 by a slotted arm 23 is an annular guard 30 surrounding approximately three quarters of the under side of the work supporting roll 16 but left open at the top to permit the co-v action of said rolls 12 and 16 with an interposed piece of work 20. It will be seen thus that the roll 16 as well as the guard members 10 and 20 are adjustable with the gage.
In the use of the machine, the displaceable guard member 10 will be kept in the position shown in Fig. 1 until the operator is ready to use the machine. It may then be moved aside by swinging the arm 32 to the position shown in Fig. 3, to allow the machine to apply cement to pieces of work interposed between the cement applying device 12 and thework supporting device 16, these pieces of work being guided by the gage 26. Vhen the operator finishes one batch of work and there is to be a substantial interval before the presentation of another batch of work, the guard member 10 is swung into position shown in Figs. '1 and 2, where it will catch any drippings from the cement roll 12.
Having thus described the invention whatis claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a cementing machine, a cement applying device, a work supporting device disposed below said cement applying device, means for protecting said work supporting device from cement drippings comprising a guard movable between two positions in one of which it is adapted to be interposed between said devices.
2. In a cementing machine, cement applying device, a work supporting device beneath said cement applying device, an annular guard surrounding a portion of said work supporting device, and a guard supplementing said annular guard and movably mounted thereon so that it may be positioned between the cement applying device and the work supporting device and moved to another position to permit said devices to coact with an interposed piece of work.
3. In a cementing machine, a cement roll,
a'work supporting roll beneath said cement roll, a movably mounted guard memberadapted to be positioned between said rolls when the machine is inactive and to be moved to an out of the way position to permit said rolls to coact with an interposed piece of work.
4. In a cementing machine, a cement roll, a work supporting roll mounted on a movable arm 1n a position beneath said cement roll, guards secured to said arm comprising a fixed portion surrounding the lower portion of the work supporting roll, and a movable portion adapted to be interposedbetween the rolls to protect that portion of the work supporting roll which is not protected bv the fixed poi tion of the guard, said movably mounted portion being adapted to be displaced to permit said rolls to coact with an interposed piece of work.
5. In a oementing'machin'e, a cement roll,
a work supporting roll mounted in a movable arm and positioned below said cement roll, a gage support secured to said bracket, and a guard supported upon said gage support comprising a movably mounted portion adapted to be interposed between the rolls or to be displaced to allow said rolls to coact with an 111- terposed piece of work.
6. In a cementing machine, a cement roll, a work supporting roll journaled in a pivoted arm and positioned below said cement roll, a gage support secured to said arm, a guard carried by said gage support and comprising an annular portion surrounding the lower portion of the work supporting roll, and another portion adapted to be interposed between said rolls, said latter portion being mounted upon an arm pivoted at a point below said work supporting roll.
