409,937. Aircraft-launching apparatus; shock-absorbers. DEUTSCHE WERKE KIEL AKT.-GES., 114, Werftstrasse, Kiel, Germany. July 18, 1933, No. 20284. Convention date, July 18, 1932. [Class 4.] In aircraft catapulting apparatus the moving parts, after launching an aircraft, are brought to rest by means of an hydraulic device and two or more pneumatic and /or spring shockabsorbing devices, the pneumatic and/or spring devices coming into action consecutively before the hydraulic device. The aircraft rests upon a truck or skid connected, by means of ropes passing over pulleys, with a hollow piston-rod 3 adapted to be ejected from a cylinder 1 by compressed air acting on a working piston 2. A piston 5 having a sleeve 6 abutting the coned end 71 of a cylinder 7 formed in the rod 3 is slidable on the hollow rod 4 of the piston 2, the rod 4 abutting the head 10 of the cylinder 7. The chamber B formed between the pistons 2, 5 is filled with compressed air fed in through openings 16 in the piston 2. In operation the pistons move together towards the cylinder cover 13 until, when the aircraft has been catapulted, the chamber A in front of the piston 5 is closed by the outward movement of the coned end 71 of the cylinder 7 through the cover 13 of the cylinder 1. This brakes the movement of the piston 5 and subsequently the piston 2 moves forward relatively to the piston 5 until the pressure on the chamber B stops the movement. Meanwhile the cylinder 7 continues its forward motion so that the cylinder head 10 recedes from the rod 4, its movement being braked by a piston 11 secured to the rod 9 of the piston 2, liquid flowing past the piston 11 through grooves in the cylinder 7.
