Abstract
Colloidal suspensions of peat are obtained by heating in an open vessel and in the presence of water, peat and an alkali in sufficient quantity to render the suspension neutral or mildly alkaline. The preferred alkali is sodium carbonate. Heating is preferably effected by blowing steam under pressure into a container in which the peat and alkali are placed in layers. The suspension may contain a suspensory agent. To this end, a cereal flour containing gluten and starch is treated with steam to form a solution. The peat suspension is then added, and, if desired, a small quantity of emulsified pine tar. During the mixing process steam is added, the suspension being finally diluted. Buxton mineral waters may advantageously be used. The bath may contain agents such as sulphurated potash, or various natural waters such as sulphurated waters may be used. Specification 312,233, [Class 1 (i)], is referred to.ALSO:Colloidal suspensions of peat are obtained by heating in an open vessel and in the presence of water, peat and an alkali in sufficient quantity to render the suspension neutral or mildly alkaline. The preferred alkali is sodium carbonate. Heating is preferably effected by blowing steam under pressure into a container in which the peat and alkali are placed in layers. The bath may contain a suspensory agent. To this end, a cereal flour containing gluten and starch is treated with steam to form a solution which is transferred to the actual bath to be used. The peat suspension is then added, and, if desired, a small quantity of emulsified pine tar. During the mixing process steam is added, the bath being finally diluted. Buxton mineral waters may advantageously be used. The bath may contain medicating agents such as sulphurated potash, or various natural waters such as sulphurated waters may be used. Specification 312,233, [Class 1 (i)], is referred to.
