Abstract
Beer scale is removed from metallic or other containers, pipes, or other parts, and rust and oxide coatings are removed from iron, copper, brass, aluminium, or tin by a sulphonic acid of the benzene or naphthalene series which may be substituted in the nucleus by methyl, hydroxyl, a halogen, a nitro-group, or the like but does not contain a side chain having more than 1 carbon atom. A little mineral acid may be present as impurity without much detriment. Acids specified are the sulphonic acids of benzene, toluene, phenol, and cresol; they may contain one or more sulphonic groups. Treatment with a 10 per cent aqueous solution at 30--40 DEG C. is suitable. The use of nitric acid is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes the cleaning of metallic or other articles and the removal of boiler scale and beer scale by an organic sulphonic acid, e.g. naphthalene sulphonic acid, and benzene sulphonic acid and derivatives thereof alkylated in the nucleus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Rust and oxide coatings are removed from iron, copper, brass, aluminium, tin, by a sulphonic acid of the benzene or naphthalene series which may be substituted in the nucleus by methyl, hydroxyl, a halogen, a nitro-group, or the like, but does not contain a side chain having more than 1 carbon atom.
