Abstract

A coating composition for protecting metals comprises a water-insoluble volatile organic degreasing agent, a clear soluble oil and water in such proportions that the composition is a stable uniphase solution which does not separate on long standing and which contains a minimum of 10 per cent by weight of water and of 15 per cent by weight of degreasing agents. The degreasing agent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene or xylene, or a halogenated hydrocarbon such as trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride or chloroform. The clear soluble oils used are blends of mineral oil and emulsifiers with small proportions of water and of organic solvents possessing both oleophilic and hydrophilic properties, which compositions, on dilution with water in any proportion, give clear solutions, a typical example containing by weight 55 per cent spindle oil, 30 per cent sodium naphthasulphonates, 5 per cent water, 5 per cent sulphated fish oil and 5 per cent diacetone alcohol. Anti-corrosion agents such as lanolin, woolgrease and petrolatum may be incorporated in the composition. A preferred composition comprises by weight 20 per cent benzene, 60 per cent clear soluble oil and 20 per cent water. Finger-prints or similar contamination may be removed from metal surfaces by treating the surfaces with the composition, removing the residual film, preferably by rinsing with a volatile degreasing agent, and then treating the surface with an anti-corrosion fluid which may be of the type described in Specification 586,679. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the removal of the residual film by rinsing in water. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
