Abstract
408,138. Hats &c. STRAUSS, A. A., Hartje Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A. Aug. 25, 1933, No. 23671. Convention date, Feb. 6. [Class 63.] A hat for protecting the head of the wearer and providing ventilation, comprises a crown portion 26, Fig. 1, provided with a number of upstanding hollow flutes 29 open at their outer ends, and radiating from an upstanding hollow boss 28. The portion 26 is provided with a downturned peripheral edge portion 27 which fits over the outer surface of the upper edge of a body portion 10, the two portions being connected together by lacing 31. A dome member 32 covers the central part of the crown portion 26. To adjust the portion 10 to fit heads of different size, stiff cross bands 17, 18, Fig. 3, are each secured at one end to the body portion 10, the remaining ends being adjustably secured to the opposite body wall. In a modification, the means for securing the crown and body portions together, comprise tabs struck out from the body portion, and extending through the crown portion. In a further modification, the upper margin of the body 10 is tapered inwardly at 10<a>, Fig. 12, at the same inclination as the lower margin of the crown, and the crown is adapted to rest upon a ledge 10<b> formed in the body 10, the two portions being secured by lacing 31. The means for adjusting the portion 10 to fit heads of different size comprise two flexible members 40, 41, Fig. 11, secured at their outer ends to the tapering margins of the crown and body portions, and having their inner ends adjustably laced together.
