Abstract

Shrinkable capsules are made by coagulating, on a mould by means of water or aqueous liquid, a solution of a cellulose acetate-formate which has been produced by formylation of a but little degraded cellulose acetate, and which is soluble in formic acid but not in acetone. The cellulose ester may be a fully esterified compound or it may contain some free hydroxyl groups. In an example, cotton linters or wood pulp are treated with caustic soda solution, pressed, disintegrated, and neutralized with acetic acid. The material is dried and then heated with acetic anhydride. The partially esterified fibrous product which is insoluble in organic solvents is washed with water or acetic acid and dried in a vacuum. The fibrous cellulose acetate is treated with formic acid and zinc chloride, and a substantially fully esterified cellulose acetate-formate is obtained. The viscous mass is diluted with more formic acid and capsules are formed by dipping moulds into the solution and then coagulating with water. To obtain coloured or opaque products, the solution is mixed with barium sulphate, metal powder, dyestuffs, or other fillers. Specification 343,889 is referred to.
