Abstract

407,385. Light valves. WALTON, G. W., 2, Dean Street, Soho, London. Aug. 19, 1932, No. 23319. [Class 49 (iii).] By means of a double-image prism 3, such as a Wollaston prism, two images of a lightsource 1 are formed in the two spaces between the three electrodes 6, 7, 8 of a Kerr cell. Two images of each image are formed by means of a further double-image prism 11. The two inner images are arranged to coincide at 19 and to wax and wane together under the influence of electric potentials applied to the Kerr cell. The two outer images are masked off by the screen 13. Instead of a Wollaston prism, prisms of Iceland spar (Fig. 6, not shown) may be used. The Kerr cell 5 may be replaced by a Kerr cell of grid type, the light passing in a parallel beam through the gaps between a number of plates (Fig. 7, not shown) ; or the Kerr cell may be replaced by a Faraday cell comprising a heavy glass block surrounded by an electromagnetic coil (Fig. 8, not shown).
