Abstract
A plastic composition, suitable for heat insulation, comprises a cellular mass of polymerised vinyl compounds known as polystyrol or under the trade name "trolitul." The mass is rendered cellular by melting it in a closed vessel containing a gas such as methyl chloride, under a pressure of 30 atmospheres, and expanding the mass into a second vessel. The material has a specific gravity of 0.1 and a cell wall thickness of 0.1 to 0.001 mm. Sawdust or fibrous material may be added to the melt together with powdered metal to produce heat reflecting surfaces on the cell walls.
