405,667. Charging batteries. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE, 54, Rue la Boetie, Paris. May 10, 1932, No. 13468. Convention date, June 26, 1931. [Class 38 (iv).] In a system of charging the batteries B, B<1>, B<11> from a constant voltage network A, A<1> an auxiliary variable source of c.m.f. is interposed between the batteries and the supply and its e.m.f. is varied by a clockwork type mechanism in accordance with a predetermined chart. The auxiliary source may be a member of separate cells e, e<1>, e<2>, &c. which are switched out of an unit by a rotary switch R which is rotated directly or indirectly by a clockwork type mechanism. In a modification the auxiliary source is a booster or voltage reducing dynamo in series with the supply to the batteries, the voltage generated by the machine being regulated by a variable resistance in its field circuit, the resistance being varied by a rotary switch as in the first case. The lengths of the switch segments are determined by the voltage-chart of the batteries, and the mechanism is set so that the arm makes the complete cycle and causes the voltage across the batteries to pass through the complete curve in the time available for charging the batteries.
