Abstract
404,844. Syphonic-discharge waterwaste-preventers. THOMPSON, J., 59, Frere Road, Durban, South Africa. May 2, 1933, No. 12786. Convention date, March 15. [Class 26.] An auxiliary cistern 2 is mounted above the ordinary cistern 1 and connected by a large bore pipe 3 the delivery end of which is normally closed by a valve 12 mounted at the end of an arm 11 which branches off from the arm 10 carrying a float 8. The arm 10 is connected to a valve 7 connected to the water supply pipe 6 and provided with a pipe 9. When the tank 1 has been emptied, water flows from the pipe 6 through the valve 7 and pipe 9 into the cistern 1 from which water overflows by the pipe 13 into the tank 1. Water rises in the syphon 15 until the aperture 46 is covered, imprisoning air in the syphon. As the water rises in the tank 1, the float 8 rises and lifts the valve 12 and water rushes into the tank 1 by the pipe 3 from the tank 2. Mounted in the flush pipe 4 which connects the tank 1 or through a water seal 17 with the pan 5 is a push-button air valve 18 comprising a casing 19 having ends 20, 21 which are screwed into the pipe 4. Inside the casing is mounted a valve 22 which slides in a housing 36 and is connected by a spring- controlled rod 23 to a push-button 24, and is normally seated against the part 39. When the button 24 is pressed, the valve 22 is disengaged from its seat and air passes from the flush pipe 4 by a pipe 28 through baffle chambers 41, 42 connected by an opening 44 into the interior of the valve seating 39 and thence to the atmosphere by an aperture 37. The pressure in the boll 15 is therefore released and syphonic action commences and continues until the tank 1 is emptied. A catch 25 pivoted to the housing 36 retains the valve 22 in its open position until the air under pressure in the pipe 4 has escaped. The stream of water down the pipe 4 impinges on the disc 26 mounted on the catch 25 and trips the latter allowing the valve 22 to return to its closed position. The cistern may be also used for urinals or latrines.
