Abstract
404,747. Feeding webs. WHITEHEAD, L. J., The White House, Lower Green, Tettenhall, Staffordshire. Aug. 12, 1932, No. 22590. [Class 100 (i).] A machine for backrolling paper strips &c. includes a stationary shaft for each roll of paper to be back-rolled and a corresponding rotary driven shaft around which the paper is back-rolled, the shafts being arranged vertically and at right angles to a stationary flat surface on which one end edge of the paper strip rests so that the roll is wound straight. One or more rolls of paper may be back-rolled at the same time, the stationary shafts 20 and driven shafts 5 being supported on the frame 1 and the shafts 5 driven from a main shaft 9 through gears 12, 13 and a chain 14. The upper end of each of the shafts 5 is supported by a short shaft 16 journalled in ball or roller bearing 17 mounted in a support 18 which is hinged to the upper end of the machine frame. The member 16 has a conical end which is knurled to engage in a suitable conical recess in the upper end of the shaft 5, whereby this upper end will run in a roller bearing which is readily removable when it is desired to release the roll x. The upper end of each stationary shaft 20 is pointed to engage a conical recess 21 in the underside of the member 18. The free end of the paper is engaged with the shaft 5 by means of a strip spring 23 which is fixed at one end to a collar 24 on the shaft and is located in a recess in the bearing member 2, the upper end of the spring being left free to press against the roller 5 and clip the paper therebetween. A flat sheet metal plate 25 rests on the top face of the support 2 for the shafts and forms a support for the paper rolls when in position ; by tilting the plate, the end of the roll is raised and the finished roll may thus be removed without handling the surface of the paper. This plate also serves as a guide for the lower edge of the paper to ensure that this is properly rolled.
