Abstract
404,631. Screw propellers. ROSS, C. H. A. F. L., 1619, Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, U.S.A. May 11, 1932, No. 13564. [Class 114.] In the manufacture of a screw propeller blade the determination of points on the driving surfaces thereof is obtained from a projection of the blade shape on a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation and both the helix angle of a circular section and the leading and trailing points are obtained from a diagram having the propeller axis as a vertical axis of reference along which are plotted distances representing angular displacement from a radially-disposed base-like whilst a horizontal axis represents radial distances. In addition the radial distances are plotted so that the resulting sections do not overlap. Fig. 1 represents the projection of a blade upon a plane at right angles to the propeller axis and from an arbitrary base-line radial to the axis circular arcs are marked with degrees showing the distances of the leading and trailing edges from the base-line. In setting out the helix angle, a method indicated in Fig. 5 is adopted, wherein the base-line represents three times the radius, the starting point A is fixed at a distance R from the origin and the vertical distance is the pitch divided by #. Other vertical distances are plotted proportionately thereto to represent angles whereby the leading and trailing points, which for example are 17‹ and 74‹ at radius 4<11>, of each section is determined. The driving face of sections at radii 2-10 as obtained from Fig. 5 are shown in Fig. 2 imposed on one diagram. Having thus determined the sections of the driving face, the blade is machined along circular arcs to correspond. A construction is also given for use with curved rear faces whereby the centre is determined in relation to the straight driving face, and the machining tool is set in accordance therewith.
