Abstract

404,094. Motors. GRASEBY, R. C., Venner Works, Kingston By-Pass Road, New Malden, Surrey. Sept. 26, 1932, No. 26691. [Class 35.] Rotary machines.-A self-starting synchronous motor with unshaded poles consists of a soft iron stator .adapted to be supplied with single-phase current to cause adjacent poles to be of opposite polarity and a polarised rotor of which adjacent poles are of opposite polarity ; the rotor and stator are relatively unbalanced either magnetically or dynamically, the air gap being uniform, and the weight of the rotor is such that it will start rotating when current is supplied to the stator coil, a mechanical check being provided to prevent rotation in one direction. The slator consists of two rings 3, 5 formed with teeth 9 and embracing the coil 11. In the form shown the rotor consists of a permanent magnet 13 with poles 15, each pole being subdivided into two sub-poles 16, 17. Magnetic unbalance in this construction is obtained by removing a small amount of material from one side of some of the poles. Alternatively, the weight of the rotor may be unbalanced. The mechanical check comprises a double cam 2a on the spindle 21 co-operating with balls 31 and a fixed collar 25. In a modification, the check acts on a second shaft geared down from the rotor spindle.
