Abstract

403,457. Adjusting brakes. BUTTERFIELD, A., Levis Motor Works, Station Road, Stechford, Birmingham, and BIELEFELD, R., 13, Rastatterstrasse, Ettlingen, Baden, Germany. July 8, 1932, No. 19316. [Class 103 (i).] A brake-adjusting device comprises a part by which two connected operating members of the brake may be moved relatively to each other to take up a predetermined amount of clearance in the brake and an adjusting means by which the operating members may be given further relative movement to apply the brake so that when the part is returned to the normal position there is a predetermined clearance in the brake. As shown, the two operating members of the brake are a lever 10 and a pull-rod 14 which passes through a pin 12 rotatable in the forked end of the lever and carries a nut 19 which abuts on a part 15 pivotally mounted on the pin 12. Normally, the slotted end 21 of the part 15 receives the wing of the nut 19 so that the nut is locked. By turning the part 15 counterclockwise, a cam face 18 thereon by engaging the nut forces the lever 10 to the left so that the brake shoes are moved towards the drum by a predetermined amount. The nut 19 is then turned so that the lever is moved further until the shoes are actually applied to the drum. The part 15 is then returned to the position shown so that the nut is again locked and the lever 10 moves back to a corresponding extent leaving an amount of clearance between the shoes and the drum corresponding to the movement given to the lever by the part 15.
