Abstract
Fuel in paste or jelly form is obtained by dissolving nitrocellulose in methyl or ethyl alcohol, adding a compound of copper, lead, or tin which is soluble therein at least in traces so as to gel the solution, and then an aliphatic hydroxy-acid as anti-gelating agent, maybe as a solution in the alcohol. The nitrocellulose preferably is such that a solution of 3 gm. in 100 c.c. of 95 per cent acetone has a viscosity of 1--350 c.g.s. units. Citric, malic, and tartaric acids are specified acids; specified gelating agents are normal lead acetate, and the compounds formed by adding finely divided copper, bronze, or other copper alloys to the nitro-cellulose solution. 0.001--0.5 gm. of metal compound and 0.2--0.5 gm. of hydroxy-acid per 100 gm. of fuel are suitable. In an example, 7 gm. of nitrocellulose of 350 e.g.s. units viscosity is dissolved in 90 gm. of methyl alcohol; 0.001 gm. of normal lead acetate in 0.5 lb. of methyl alcohol is mixed in, and then 0.2 gm. of citric acid in 2.5 gm. of methyl alcohol. The fuel is packed in collapsable lead tubes or in other metal containers for petty uses.
