Abstract
356,256. Explosives. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I. ; Wilmington, Delaware, U.S.A.) June 5, 1930, No. 17454. [Class 9 (ii).] A propellent powder capable of being waterdried comprises nitrocellulose in combination with a polynitrotoluol and an ester of an organic acid such as dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, ethyl palmitate, or acetyl laurins which is acetyl-modified coco nut oil and consists of a mixture of monoacetyl-dilaurin and diacetylmonolaurin. The nitrocellulose should preferably contain more than 12 À9 per cent of nitrogen ; and a stabilizer such as diphenylamine may be added to the above ingredients. An example contains 85 parts of nitrocellulose, 10 parts ofdinitrotoluol, 5 parts of dibutyl phthalate, and 1 part of diphenylamine. The proportions may be slightly varied. The nitrocellulose is first dehydrated with denatured alcohol, the colloidid by the addition of ether and the dinitrotoluol and ester, less alcohol and ether being required than usual. The diphenylamine may be dissolved in the ether.
