Abstract

403,389. Rotary spherical valves. ALLEN, R., 23, Berwick Avenue, Hayes Bridge Estate, Hayes, Middlesex. June 18, 1932, No. 17246. [Class 135.] A rotary ball valve comprises a ball member 5, Fig. 1, one or a pair of self-adjustable seating or seatings 7, preferably wedge-shaped, pressed by a spring, such as 10, an operating spindle 11, and a separate coupling member 16 forming a universal connection providing for self-adjustment and alignment between the ball and spindle. The coupling member 16 is preferably of the form which is slotted at the top to engage a tongue 21 of the spindle, and formed with a tongue 17 at right angles to the slot above to engage a corresponding slot in the ball. The spindle is supported by a spring 33 resting on a V-ring 30 and packings, the hand wheel 22 having a flanged depending enclosing skirt 25 with a stop pin 29 operating in a recess cut in the periphery of the flange 27. The removable seat rings 13 may be supported by a flanged ring frame resting on the bottom of the casing so that, in wear, only the wedging members 7 move downwards to take up the wear. In the modification shown in Fig. 19 the ball 5 is gripped between a fixed seating 60 and a seating member 61, preferably in the form of a lantern tube disposed in a bush 64 and having its sides curved inwards to give it a spring action to press the flanged inner end 65 of the tube yieldingly against the ball valve. Alternatively the seating may be pressed to the ball by an involute spring in which the coils slide over each other, or a spiral spring having its coils reverse bevelled so as to slide across one another may be used.
