[Class 135.] A device for preventing fluids from flowing between the surfaces of mechanical members facing each other and having relative sliding motion, such as valves, comprises one or more split elastic rings 5, 5<0> arranged in grooves in one member, the inclined surfaces of he groove contacting with the inclined side of the ring so that by its own elasticity, the ring is pressed against the opposing member. The members may have spherical or cylindrical surfaces and the rings may be of trapezoidal, triangular, or curved cross section. The inner or outer surfaces of the groove may be inclined. The rings may also be made spiral in shape.
