Abstract
400,564. Screw fans. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(General Electric Co. ; Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) June 28, 1933, No. 18413. [Class 110 (i).] The blades of a fan are so constructed that the leading edge 16 of each is concave in shape and pointed near its periphery ; it extends behind the trailing edge 17 of the preceding blade. A preferred fan construction with three blades is shown, and the combined area of the blades is substantially the same as the disc area of the fan. The blades are secured to the hub 14 over resilient packing 19 by screws 15. A number of arcs a .. j with the fan axis as centre are shown on the plan view of a blade, Fig. 3. The peripheral edge 18 is a circular arc a in the trailing half of the blade, and a curve of decreasing radius in the leading half of the blade. Some air may therefore be drawn in over the leading part of the peripheral edge. Each of the arcs a .. j lies in a plane and the angle made by that plane with the plane of the fan increases from the outside arc a to the inside arc j. In a modification, each blade is substantially a plane surface, except at the trailing end where an additional bend is given to compensate for decreasing pitch. The construction and arrangement diminishes the noise caused by the fan.
