Abstract

400,463. Tipping vehicles. THEED, W. D. L., Park House, Hampton - on - Thames, Middlesex. Jan. 18, 1933, No. 1681. [Class 108 (i).] A vehicle body is tipped by a pneumatic device comprising a piston and cylinder, one connected to the chassis and the other to the body and an air compressor driven by the vehicle internal-combustion engine and means whereby the supply of compressed air is automatically released or cut off at an appropriate stage of the tipping. The vehicle is tipped pneumatically by means of a cylinder D pivoted to the body A and having a hollow piston-rod F connected to the air compressor G driven from the engine or to a reservoir connected to the compressor. The piston mounted on the pistonrod comprises a disc E, cup leather E<1> and washer E<2>, a liquid seal being also provided. The lower end of the piston-rod has a spherical seating F2, B3 and a spring-controlled rod F<1> is secured to the piston-rod. Means are provided for limiting the stroke comprising appropriate apertures in the cylinder or a valve in the piston adapted to be opened mechanically towards the end of the stroke to relieve the air pressure or means such as a cable secured to the body is adapted to shut off the compressor when the desired degree of tipping is attained. A pipe K connected to the compressor may be provided for pumping tyres &c. The tail gate A<3> is adapted to be released after tipping has commenced by means of a latch connected by a cord to the tipping pivot B<1>.
