667,269. Compressors. GRAHAME, G. H. July 12, 1949 [March 25, 1948], No. 8777/48. Class 8 (i) An air compressor of the type attachable to a vehicle road wheel to rotate therewith, to maintain tyre pressure and including a heavy driver connected to the compressor and rotatable relatively thereto about the wheel axis, comprises a rotatable member and a weight carried by it, there being provision between them for a secondary to-and-fro movement of the weight relative to said member and in which the operative connection between the driver and the compressor incorporates a speed reduction gear. A cylinder 11 secured in a casing 7a attached to the wheel hub, has a piston 12 therein connected to a crosshead 14 reciprocated by a crank pin 23 on a gear wheel 22 which meshes with a pinion 21 mounted on a shaft 19 pivoted in the casing 7a coaxial with the wheel shaft. Secured to the. shaft 19 is a cage 17, 18 containing a heavy disc 16 having limited movement in the cage 17, 18, opposed by leaf springs 20, this movement tending to prevent the cage 17, 18 rotating with the wheel. The cylinder 11 has an outlet valve 26, a connection 28 to the tyre and a relief valve 30. The compressor draws air from the casing 7a, which contains lubricant, though an inlet forming a trap to prevent escape of lubricant.
