Be it known that I, ALBERT B. P-noERsnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Eureka, in the county of J uab and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Compressors, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to improvements in 1 air compressors.
The present invention more particularly relates to improvements over my Patent No. 1,333,774, issued March 16, 1920. In the patent referred to an air compressor is dlsclosed especially adapted for inflating tires of motor Vehicles or the like wherein the air compressed is submitted to two stages of compression, one of said stages occurring continuously, while the other is controlled by the pressure within the vehlcle tire being inflated or other receiver for the compressed air.
The object of the present invention 18 generally to improve the construction and operative efficiency of the pump or air compressor disclosed in my'previous patent.
The present invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the air compressor or'pump when fully assembled, and
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same taken in a plane at right angles to Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the device may comprise the two cylinders C and C, the two pistons P and P operable respectively within said cylinders and a crank shaft K carrying upon each end a fly wheel F, said crank shaft being connected to the pistons P and P for operating the same. More specifically the cylinder C may consist in a hollow cylindrical casting having formed upon its outer surface the annular rims or cooling fins 10. The cylinder may have its one end closed by a base plate 11. The base plate 11 may have threaded into its one end a nipple 12, said nipple extending below the base plate 11 and being formed with the laterally extending inlet passages 13. The one end of the nipple 12 is bevelled upon its interior periphery and AIR COMPRESSOR.

bers extending upwardly from the cylinder I and each member terminating at its upper end in a semi-circular and laterally extending shaft bearing portion '18 by which the end portions of the crank shaft K may be journaled.
The cylinder C may also be provided with cooling fins 19 and its upper end being closed as at 20 and having threaded in this end a valve cage 21 which is in the form of a sleeve within which there is positioned a valve member 22, the inner end of the member 21 being bevelled and adapted to seat the valve member 22. The valve member 22 is formed with a stem 23 which is pressed inwardly by a spring 24. A nipple 25 is threaded into the outer end of the member 21 and adapted to hold the spring 24 in position. Also a sleeve 26 may be positioned upon the stem 23 to serve as a guide therefor and adapted to slide within the coil spring 24. The nipple 25 may be threaded interiorly as at 27 whereby a hose connection or the like may be made therewith. The cylinder C also is formed with a pair of depending members 28, each of which terminates in a bearing cap 29 adapted to fit upon the bearing portions 18 of the cylinder 0. The caps 29 may be secured to the bearing members or portions 18 by suitable flange bolts 20. The extensions 17 of the cylinder G and also the extensions 28 of the cylinder C may be formed with suitable reinforcing ribs as at 30.
As seen in the drawings the cylinder C is of greater diameter than the cylinder 0. The piston P fits within the cylinder C and the piston P within the cylinder C and these pistons are integrally connected by a body portion D, said body portion consisting-in a semi-circular portion 31, the ends of which terminate in a substantially inverted V-sha-ped portion 32. The body member is hollow to provide a passageway 33 which extends entirely thereabout and is adapted to establish communication between the interior of the pistons P and P as illustrated in Figure 2. The pistons P and P are likewise hollow and each formed at its outer end with a head closure In the head 34: of the piston P there-is threads ed therethrough a nipple 35 which has its lower end formed with an inwardly extending rib or flange 36 which is bevelled and adapted to seat the valve member 37 The valve 37 is provided with a stem 38 which passes through a spider" guide 39 and is yieldingly held against upward movement the coil spring 40. As the pistons .P and P continue to move upwardif no great-er resistance isofllered to the lifting of the. valve "22 than that given bythe corn pression spring associated" with this valve, said valve will immediately lift and permit the air to escape to the tire beinginflated.

Upon the tire becoming inflated and causing a power pres sure upon the valve member 2-2 then the air will receive a second compression, while within the cylinder C" thiscompression will be suflicient to overcome the pressure of the air vwithin-the (tire casing plug the resistance ofthe spring 24 associatedwith the valve member 22., As'is obvious byinfiatingj atire with a pump of this character a uniform rise in the pressure of air within the tire casing may be had.

I claim 1. In a device of tliecha'acter described, a cylinder disposed vcrticallywithrelation to its bore, arms extending from said cylinder terininating in bearing members, a crank shaft supported bysaid bearing members, a second cylinderhaving arms extending from the one end thereof, each arm terminating in a bearing cap and adapted to seat upon the bearing members of tl'ie first named cylinder whereby to support the? second cylinder in axial alignment with the first named cylinder-fa crank shaft-supported by said bearings, a piston within each cylinder, and connecting means between said crank shaft andl pistons whereby the' pistons may be reciprocated with the rotation of said crank shaft,and hollow connecting means between the pistons whereby the pistons are placed incomminiication with eachothcr.

In a device of the character described, a. base plate having an upstanding cylinder formedthereon, said cylinder having its free end terminating in a pair of supporting arms and each'arm terminatin, :in '1 laterally extending bearing -member, a crank shaft jonrnalod by said bearingniember, a second cylinder having apair of arms each terminating, in a bearing capextending from one end-thereof", and said c-apsbe ing adapted to be positionerlupon .the bearings of the first named cylinder whereby to support the second cylinder in axial alignment-with the first cylinder, a piston within each cylinder, and connecting means between said crank shaft and pistons whereby the pistons may berecnn o'cated with the rotation of. said crank shaft, and hollow connecting means between the pistons whereby the pistons are placed in communication with each other.
3. In a device of the character described, pair of aligned cylinders, a hollow piston in each cylinder, integral means for connect ing said pistons comprising a hollow casting consisting in a semi-circular portion and V- shaped portionladapted to establish communication between the interior of said pistons and alsov adapted to have a crank shaft e tending therethrough and turnable therein, and means forconnectingthe crank shaft to. the casting whereby to cause reciprocation of the pistons with the rotation of-said crank shaft.
