Abstract

326,115. Atkins, W. J. June 29, 1929. Actuating pumps by motion of vehicles. - A compressor is actuated by the vibration of a vehicle on which it is mounted through a toothed rack or quadrant gearing with a pinion which operates the crank of the compressor, the piston being caused to make at least one full stroke on the mean vibratory movement of the part from which it is driven. The cylinder 1 is mounted on the chassis 2 and its piston crank shaft 5 rotates in a bracket fixed to the chassis. A pinion 6 on the shaft is driven by a rack 7 pivoted to the fitting 8 which connects the leaf spring to the rear axle; the pump delivers to a reservoir 10. In a modification a quadrant mounted on a rock shaft on the chassis actuates the pinion, the quadrant being connected to a link pivoted to the fitting 8. Motion of the piston beyond the full stroke position may be prevented, e.g. by a " hit and miss" arrangement in which the gear releases the piston beyond this point, reengaging on the return stroke. The compressor may be put out of action automatically on the reservoir pressure reaching a given value, through means controlled by air from the reservoir, and be put in action again by a spring on fall of the pressure.
