Be it known that I, Oscar: EVERSON, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at Hibbing in the county of StQLouis and State of Minnesota, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Sight- Feed Oil-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to lubricators and the primary object. of the invention is to provide an improved sight forced'feed lubricator for the bearings of steam engines in which a single operating cam is utilized for operating *the measuring and forcing pistons for the lubricant. v
Another object ofthe inventionis to provide an improved sight feed lubricator embodying a pair of synchronously operated pistons, one, of the pistonsibeing adapted to suck in and forcethe lubricantto the sight compartment and the other piston being adapted tosuck the lubricant fromthe-sight compartment and to'force the same to the delivery pipe. The pistons being so arranged that on one stroke the lubricant "will be sucked from thesupply tank and .from the sight compartmentrespectively and on the next stroke forced to. the sight compartment and to the delivery pipe respectively.
A further object of the invention is .to provide a single cylinder block embodying a pair-'ofcylinders rotatably mounted on a suitable supported valve member and a pair of. cam operated plungers slidably mounted in the cylinders.
A still further object of the invention is 'to provide an improved sight force feed lubricator for the bearings of steam engines and the like. of the above character, which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of partsas will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. in which drawings:

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference character designate corresponding parts throughout the several yiews, the letter A generally indicates the improved lubricator which include thesupply "tank orreservolrB and the operating mechanism C.

These walls are shown constructed from metal. plates but it is to be understood that the reservoir or supply tankmay be constructed in any preferred manner and ofany desired confi guration. The upper Wall9 ofzth'e tank or reser voir .B is provided with the sight feed compartment 11 whichis of substantiallyfrusto pyramidal configuration and is provided with transparent walls 12 which permit of a viewbeing obtained of the interior of the compartment 11.
The operating mechanism C includes a pair of cylinders 13. and 14: and these cylinders are cast in block and have the upper terminals thereoflopen for thereception of the operating plungers 15 and 16. Suitable stuffing boxes 17 are provided for the upper ends ofthe cylinders so as to prevent escape of the lubricant from between the pistens or plungers and the upper ends of the cylinders. The lowerends of the cylinders 13 and 14 are provided respectively with. ports 18'and l9. 'Tlie'lowe r end of the cyl inder block is provided with a substantially semiecylindrical concaved bearing face 20 which rests for swinging movement on the upper surfaceof the cylindrical solid ported valve'block j21. Theaopposite faces ofthe cylin'derblock at i-ts' lower end are provided with outwardly extending ears 22- and 23' and these ear have resting against the same,-the outwardly extending ears 24 and 25 formed on the terminals of the semi: cylindrical strap 26 which engages the lower face of the valveblock 21. The ears 22 and 24 are connected by any suitable fastening element 27 while the ears 23 and 25 are connected by a screw 28 which slidably receives the upper ear 23. The screw 28 has coiled around the same a tension spring 29 which engages the upper surface ofthe ear 23 and normally holds the ears 23 and 25 together, This construction holes the cylinder block and strap 26 in tight engagement with the cylindrical. valve.,-block 21. The valve block 21 is provided at its edges,
with outstanding annular flanges 30 between which fits the strap 26 and the lower end of the cylinder block. The outer end of the valve block i also provided with a relatively large annular flange 31, which is bolted or otherwise secured as at 32 to the side or end wall 8 of the reservoir or supply tank B. The valve block 21 is providedwith a pair of spaced upper ports 32 and'33 and a lower outlet port These ports 32, 33 and 34 are arranged in parallel relation to the axial center of the valve block and extend to the inner surface thereofso as to communicate with the interior of the supply tank or reservoir. ,The upper ports 32 and 33 are provided with outwardlyextending inclined ports 35 and 36 which are adapted to aline at predeterminedtimes with the ports 18 and 19 formed in the cylinder block. The lower port 34 is provided with an upwardly inclined port 37 which is adapted to aline with the inlet port 1.8 and this port 34 also has communicating therewiththe. outlet feed pipe 38. The outlet pipe 38 is connected by suitable coupling 39 to the front wall 5 of the reservoir and extends outwardly of the'same. This pipe is then extended to the bearing or'bearings to be lubricated. 'The valve block opposite to the port 34 is pro vided with a pair of angular'related upper and lower ports 40 and 41 and the upper port 40 is adapted to aline at certain times with the port 19 and: the lower port 41 is adapted to aline at certain times with the inlet'port 42, which communicates with the reservoir or supply 'tank. The ports 32 and 33 have communicating therewith thev up wardly extending pipes 43 and 44. The pipe 43 communicates with the lower endof the lubricant receiving cup 45 which is carried by the upper wall?) of the reservoir, This cup as shown projects intothe sight compartment 11. The pipe 44 is provided with a goose neck 46 which extends into the sight compartment and thelower end of the goose neck pipe 46 extends directly over the cup 45 and by looking into any one of the trans parent walls of the sight compartment. the feed of the lubricant can he readilyseen.
A pair of shafts 47 and 48 are arranged in axial alinement and extends, longitudinallythrough the tank and are mounted in suitable bearings 49 carried by the side walls of the tank, These bearings are provided with suitable stuffing boxes so as to prevent the escape of the lubricant through the same. The shaft 47 is provided with a relatively larger diameter than the shaft 48 and'is provided with an axial bore 50 for rotatably receiving the inner end of the shaft 48. The shaft 48 has keyed or otherwise secured thereto the eccentric or cam 51 and this cam has mounted thereon a cam strap -52Wl116l1-1$f0fl116l in two sections.
The lower section 53 is provided with threaded sockets for the reception of the upper reduced threaded ends 54 of the plungers 15 and 16. Thus itcan beseen shaft has rotatably mounted thereon a hand crank 56 which is provided with notches 57 for the reception of the pin. It can be seen that when the crank is moved so .as to position the walls of the notches in engagement with the pin 55 upon rotation of the crank the shaft will. be rotated therewith. The
outer end of the shaft 47 is provided with 1 an arm 58 which may be connected to-"any preferred operating part of the engine with which the sight feed lubricator is associated.
To permit of the turning of the shaft 48 when the shaft 47- is rotated, a ratchet wheel 59 is secured to the inner end of the shaft 48 and thisratchet wheel 59 is adapted to be engaged by a dog 60 which is pivotally connected to the outer end of an arm 61, which is secured in any preferred manner to the shaft 47. To prevent retrograde'movement of the ratchet 59 a second pivoted dog 62 is provided for engaging the ratchet wheel 59 and this dog is pivotally carried by a depending bracket 63 which is secured in any preferred manner: to the inner surface of the'upper wall 9. vAn expansion spring 64 engages the dog 62 and normally holds the same in engagement with the ratchet wheel. A contractile coil spring 65 is' also provided for normally holding the dogs or pawls 60in engagement' with the ratchet 59 and this springais connected respectively to the arm 61 and the pawl 60.
It can be seen that when the crank 56 is utilized for rotating thefshaft 48, no movement will be transmitted to the shaft 47 owing to the ratchet conncctionj In operation of the improved lubricator,

Thus it will be seen that the course of the lubricating oil is as follows: through the ports 42, 11, 40 and 19 and into the cylinder let and then out of the cylinder 14 through the ports 19, 36 and into the pipe 414: where the same is forced upwardly to the goose neck 46 and into the cup 45 where the feed can be seen by the operator. The oil will then flow down the pipe 43 and will be sucked into the cylinder 13 through the ports 32, 35 and 18 into the cylinder and then out of the cylinder to the port 18, 37, 3d and into the feed pipe.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved and simple form of sight feed lubricator has been provided in which a predetermined amount of lubricating oil will be forced to the bearings on each operation of the lubricator. It can also be seen that the device is so constructed that the plungers or pistons 15 and 16 are operated by a single operating cam.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
1. In a lubricator, a pair of cylinders arranged for synchronous oscillating movement, a pair of plungers arranged in said cylinders for synchronous reciprocating movement, means for operating said plungers and cylinders, a sight feed device, one of said cylinders and plungers forming a means for forcing the lubricating oil to the sight feed device and the other plunger and cylinder forming the means for receiving the oil from the sight feed device and for forcing the oil to the bearing to be lubricated.
2. In a lubricator, a cylinder block including a pair of cylinders having ports formed therein, a ported valve block, means rotatably connecting the cylinder block with the valve block, a pair of plungers slidably mounted in said cylinders, a sight feed device, one of said cylinders and plungers forming a means for forcing the lubricating oil to the sight feed device and the other plunger and cylinder forming means for re ceiving the oil from the sight feed device and for forcing the oil to the bearmg to be lubricated and a single cam for operating.

In a lubricator, a reservoir, a cylinder block including a pair of cylinders, a port formed in the lower end" of each cylinder, a valve block, means rotatably mounting the cylinder block on the valve block, inlet and outlet ports formed in the valve block, the inlet port communicating with the reservoir, an outlet feed pipe communieating with the outlet port, the ports being adapted to aline with the ports formed in the lower end of the cylinders, a sight feed device including a pair of pipes, ports formed in the valve block communicating with said pipes and arranged to aline with the ports in the cylinder block, a pair of sliding plungers mounted in said cylinders, a shaft, a cam mounted on said shaft, and a cam strap arranged to receive said shaft and connected to said pistons, oneof said cylinders and one of said plungers forming a means for forcing the lubricating oil to the sight feed device, and one of the plungers and cylinders forming the means for receiving the oil from the sight feed device and for forcing oil to the bearing to be lubricated.

manual means for operating one of said shafts, mechanical means for operating the other shaft, a ratchet Wheel secured to one of the shafts, and a dog mechanism carried by the other shaft.
