Be itknown thatwe, BARRY lvoR and JOHN S. W'ABD, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of liiinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Feed Luloricators, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention'relates-to improvements in that class of luhricators or small pumps employed for forcing oil to any part or parts that it is desired to have constantly and uniformlylubricated; and it consists in certain peculiarities of'the construction, novel a'rrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to whichour invention pertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurql is a front view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of a lubricator embodying our invention. The casing or main frame 16 is preferably rectangular in shape and may have its front portion closed by means of a door, which maybe fastened by means of a seal, thus preventing access to and tampering-with the adjusting devices of the lubricator. The casing 16 is preferably provided with a horizontal partition 19, on which is supported the steam-engine 20, used for operating the pump, and which engine may be of the ordinary or any preferred construction; but as we do not olaim'any hing new in the engine itself we will describdsuoh parts thereof only as will'he necessary for the proper understanding of the operation of our apparatus. This engine consists of a cylinder 21, a piston 22, and a reciprocating piston-rod 23, with the necessary valves, ports, and packing to render it operative. Located on the upper portion of the casing or main frame 16 is the oil-reservoir 24, which is provided with a supply-pipe 25, having at its upper end a removable plug or cap 26 to close the LIA a: a v v 734,069

The front lower portion of the reservoir is preferably provided with an offset 26 for the reception of a portion of the pumps, as will be presently explained. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, W6 have shown the apparatus as having four pum ps to be operated by the steam-engine, two of which, 57 and 58, are operated by the main shaft 29 and the other two, 5!) and (50, are operated by the auxiliary shaft. Between the pair of pumps 57 and 5S and between the pair of pninps 59 and 60 is located a vertical guidepiece ill or hearing for the rods 62, and said guide or hearing pieces are formed at their upper ends with cups 63 for oil for said rods. The lower end of each of these rods is screwed into a suitable socket (it on a band 65, which surrounds an eccentric 66, secured by means of set-screws (37 or otherwise to one of the main driving-shafts at a point below and between each pair of pumps. These pumps are of the same construction, and each consists of a vertical cylindrical portion 68 and a horizontal portion 69, which extends rearwardly and is secured to the front portion of the offset 28 of the reservoir by means of bolts 70. The lower portion of the pipe 93 is formed with an opening 9%, which is closed by means of a plug 95, and which opening is for the about its middle is an extension 98, which is hollow and has an upwardly-extending arm 99, provided with a scale 100. Located in the opening of the extension 98 isa pistonrod 101, which is provided on its outer portion with enlargements 102 to act on the lower end of the pointer 103, which is pivotaily so cured to the arm 99 and is used in connection with the scale 100 to indicate the quantity of oil that is being forced through the tubular piece 96 and oil-pipe. The upper end of the tubular piece 96 is provided with a spring-pressed hall-valve 101 to normally close the opening in the tubular piece. By
taking hold of the knob or thumb-niece with the hand on the outer end of the rod 101 and pressing it inwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5 it is apparent that as the oil is forced through the tubular piece 96 the piston-rod will he forcedoutwardly, thus causing one of The projections 102 to impinge the lower end of the pointer103 and toindicate on the scale the rate of stroke of the pump-piston. The lower portion of each of the pistousj' is screw-threaded to receive the jam-nuts 105 and the wing-nuts 106, used for removably connecting the crossbar 78 to the piston-rods, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The cross-bar '78 may be adjustably secured to'the rod 62 by means of a setscrew 107 passing through its central portion, and a nut turning them on the rods 62 and without removing the nuts 105 and 106, as is apparent. Secured to the outer end of the piston-rod 23 by means of a collar 109 and a set'screw 110 is a cross-head 111, having a slot 112, in
which is adjustablysecured, by means of nuts 113 and 114, a bolt 115, which has on its end a head 116 and passes through a slot 117 in a crank 11S, whichis secured on the end of a shaft 119, journaled, preferably, in ball-bearings 120 on the lower portion of the main frame and at right angles to the main driving-shaft. Mount-ed on the shaft 119 is a beveled gear 121, which meshes with the beveled gear 33 on the driving-shaft. Communicating through a pipe '122 with the rear portion of the reservoir is a hand-pump 123, which is provided at one of its ends with a stuffingdiox 12% and a gland or follower 125, surrounding the piston-rod 126., which has on its outer end a hand-wheel 127 and on its innor end a piston 128 to pperate in the cavity 129 of the pump-cylinder, which channel or, cavity communicates with the oii chamher 130, which is closed by means of a screw-cap 131 on the opposite end of the pump-cylinder from that on which the gland is located. Communicating with the lower portion of the oil-chamber and with the pipe 122 is a valve-chamber 132, which is provided with a ball-valve 133 to open and close the same. Secured on the upper portion of the pump cylinder 123 is a piece 134, having a valvechamber 135, coniniiinicating with the upper portion of the oil-chamber and also with the branch pipes 136, to each of which may be secured a pipe 1.37, leading to any desired point or part to be lubricated; but in the present instance we have shown the pipe 137.
provided with a shntpfi valve 138 and communicating with one of the pipes 97, leading from the engine-pumps.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings it will be clearly seen and. readily understood that by the reciprocation of the piston-rod 23 of the engine and its connection with the shaft 119 said shaft and the gear 121 which it carries wiii be rocked hack and forth, thus imparting an oscillatory motion to the gear 33, which by means of its pawls 35 will cause the ratchet-wheel 31' and the driving-shaft 29 to be intermittently rctated, in which operation the piston-rods M of the pumps will be intermittently reciprocated by reason of their connection through the cross-bar 78 with the rod 62 and its eccentric connection with thedriving-shaft. what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a luhricator, the combination with arnain ,fraineor casing, of an oil-i eservoir mounted thereon, a pump communicatingwith the reservoir, an engine located within the casing near the reservoir and haviiig'a reciprocating piston-rod, a drivirigshai'tjonrualed in the loweeportion of the casing, an eccentric and adjustable means thereon connecting the piston-rod of the pump with the driving'shaft, a ratchet-wheel fixed on the driving-shaft, a beveled gear loosely mounted on said shaft and carrying a pawi to engage the ratchet-wheel, shaft journaled on the mainframe near the driving-shaft, a beveled gear mounted on said shaft and meshing with the first-named gear, andct crank on the last-named shaft adjustably connected to the piston-rod of the engine, substantially as described.
2. In a lubricator, the combination with a pump, of an engine having a reciprocating piston-rod, a drivingsaaftsuitably jo urnaled and connected to the piston-rod of the pump, a ratchet-wheel fixed on said shaft, a beveled gear loosely mounted on the driving-shaft and carrying: a pawl to engage the ratchet- Wheel, a shaft journaled at a right angle to the driving-shaft, a beveled gear mounted thereon and meshing with the first-named gear, and a cranlt on said shaft adjustably connected to the piston-rod of the engine, substantially as described.

In a lubricator, the combination with a main frame or casing having in its lower portion a. series of oil-wells, a driving-shaft journaled in the casing abovosaid 'wells, a pn m p operatively connected to said shaft, an engine having a reciprocating, pist-oirrod, a ratchet-Wheel fixed on the driving shaft', a beveled gear loosely mounted. on the drivingshaft and carrying a pawl to engage the ratchet-Wheel, a shaft journaled at right angles to the driving-shaft, a beveled near mounted thereon and meshing with the firstnamed gear, and a crank on said shaft adjustably connected to the piston-rod of the engine, substantially as described.
8. In alubricator, a pump comprising vertical portion havin an Oil and piston chamber provided with valve-chambers at its top and side, and a horizontal portion provided with an oil-inlet, valve-chamber and channels between said waive-chamber and the valve-chamber at the side of the vertical portion, a piston in said piston-chamber and a ball-valve in each of said valve chambers, substantially as described.
9. In a lnbricator, an eil-pump indicator consisting of a tubular piece having in its upper portion a ball-valve and a hollow extension below said valve provided with a graduated arm, a pointer pivotally' secured to said arm, and a piston-rod horizontally located in the hollow extension and provided with enlargement to engage the lower end of the pointer and having on its outer end a knob or thumb-piece, substantially as described.
