Description

(No Model.)
y/////////////////////*////////i///////////f/"A LN VEJvLro'R UNITED STATES 'PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. HAYS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-CYLINDER LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,667, dated December 5, 1882.
' Application tiled October 24, IBSQ. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. HAYS, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Cylinder Lubricators; and I do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part oi'this specication- Figure l being a central longitudinal vertical section ot asteam-cylinder lubricator consti ucted with my improvements; Fig. 2, aview ot' a tappet for operating the lubrieator, and represented as attached to the connecting-rod oi' the steam-engine.
My invention consists in an improved deviceby which some moving part ofthe engine acts directly on the plunger which feeds the oil to the interior ofthe cylinder, and in connection therewith the means by which the length of the stroke ofthe plungeris varied at will, while the part of the engine which moves the plunger remains constant in position.
Let A represent theluorieating-pump, ofany suitable or ordinary construction, and B the plunger. .To the pump-barrelisattached aholder, O, containing a (preferably coiled)spring,l). The pump and holder are mounted upon the cylinder ofthe engine or other convenientsupport. The outer end ofthe plungeris attached to a sliding bolt, E, which is mounted in and reciprocates in the holder C, and projects beyond it, substantially as shown. An arm or rapper, G, is attached to the connecting-rod H of the engine or equivalent moving part thereof, so as to be in right position to strike the bolt E or extension of the plunger. The
tappet Gr thus gives motion to the plunger in ,A
and press outward against the bolt E or an',v
enlargement, a, on the plunger or bolt, as shown, or ozherwise. The other end of the spring bears against a follower or head, I, which screws into the holder C, more or less, and thus regulates the force of the spring as required. The plunger works through a packing-head, b, to confine the oil in the pump at that end. The length ofthe stroke ofthe piston, and consequentlytheamountofoilpumped into the cylinder, is `regulated by means of a cap, K, screwed upon the outer end of the bolt E, more or less, as required.
This invention is very cheap and simple in construction, and its action direct and effectual.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the lubricator plunger-extension E, tappet G, on a movable partofthe engine, and the counter-spring D, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. In combination with the plunger-extension E and tappet G, the cap K, adjustable upon the said plunger-extension, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
JOHN IV. HAYS.
