Description

(No Model.)
J. W. HAYS. STEAM CYLINDER LUBRIGATOR. No. 269,666. Patented Dee.26,1882.
I JV VEN TOR WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. HAYS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-CYLINDER LUBR'ICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,666, dated December 26, 1882. `Application led October 24, 1882. (No model.)
` To all uhom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN lV. HAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and lState ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Ituprovements in Steam-Cylinder Lnbricators; and I do declare the following vto be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention., such as will enable others skilled in the art to .which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the lettersand figures ot' ret'er-V ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication 'Figure l being a centrallongitudinal vertical section of my improved lubricator, showing the plunger in one position; Fig. 2, a similar section of the lubricator, showing the plunger in another position.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in both figures.
My improved steanrcylinder lnbricator depends for its action upon the variation ofthe steam-pressure in the cylinder itself-that is, when the steamis under pressure in the cyl'- inder, it forces the plunger of the lubricatorpump forward, and when the steam exhausts in the cylinder and the pressure against the plunger is relieved the said plunger is forced back hy a. spring.
Inv the drawings, A represents the body or holder, in which is mounted my improved de vice for operating the lnbricator-plunger by the alternate action of steam-pressure and a spring. rlhis holder is to be screwed into or otherwise attached to the engine-cylinder at or near one-end thereof', so that; its interior will communicate with the interior of the cylinder. The labricator-plunger B has an enlarged portionor piston, a, working in the bore of theliiner end of the holder, and provided with a. packing, b, so as to t steamtight therein. Further outward in the said holder the plunger `'has au enlargement, c,
moving in-the inner end of an enlarged cavity,
d, of the holder A. The said cavity alsocontains a coiled spring,'0, which bears inward l at one end against the plunger enlargement. c, while its other end'bears-against a head or bush, D, which screws into the outer end ot' the holder more or less, and thereby adjusts the strength ot' the said spring, as may be necessary or desired. There is also another bush or bolt, E, which surrounds the plunger B and screws intoY and extends through the bush D and reaches beyond it nearly into the inner end-ot' the cavity (l. This bush 0r bolt E limits the outward movement of the plunger B, and by screwing it more or less into the cavity the length ot' thc stroke ofthe plunger is varied at will. Fig. 2 shows the plunger at theend ofaints'outward stroke, and Fig. l shows "it at the termination of its inward stroke.
The lubricator-pump G is ot' ordinary construction, and is mounted upon any suitable support.
What I claim as new, and desire to Letters Patent, is-
1. In a steam-cylinder lubicator, the lubricator-plunger B, extended ont of the lubricat'or-pnmp into a holder, A, attached to and communicating with tll'e interiorI of the engine-cylinder, and terminating with a piston to work in the said holder, in combination with a spring, (J, mounted in the holder and pressing in a direction counter to the pressure ofthe steam in the cylinder, substantially as and for the purpose herein specitied.
2. ln combination with the spring C, mounted in the holder A, the bush or head l), screwing into the said holder A to adjust the force secure by ofthe said spring, substantially as and for thc purpose herein specified.
3. ln combination with the plunger B. provided with an enlargement, c, the adjusting bush or bolt E, substantially as and tor the purpose herein specitied.
In testimony whereot'l aix Amy signature in presence ot two witnesses.
JOHN W. HAYS.
