Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 18, 191-3. Serial No. 755,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS F. TRULLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricators for Steam and other Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved lubricator especially adapted for use in connection with a steam or other type of engine and also for use on machinery of various kinds forforcing lubricant to the parts required against the steam. pressureof the boiler, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. 7
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a lubricator constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use on the cylinder of a steam engine and arranged with its plunger for operation by the piston of the engine. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention here shown, I provide a base plate 1 which is adapted to be secured on one side of the engine cylinder 2 atone end thereof. This base plate is provided at its outer end, with a guide 3 which is here shown as having a threaded stem that passes through an opening in the base plate and as clamped in place on the base plate by a nut 1. The guide has a rectangular opening 5.
The pump barrel 6 is secured on the base plate 1 and has a longitudinal bore and is provided at its front end with a stuffing box 7 and at its rear end with'a nipple arranged for the attachment of a steam pipe 9. An oil cup 10 is mounted on one slde of the pump barrel 6 as at 11 and an oil pipe 12 in the said cup extendsthrough one side of the pump barrel and communicates with the bore 13 of the pump barrel.
A plunger rod 14 fits and is adapted to reciprocate in the bore 13 of the pump barrel and is under cut at its inner end as at 15 so as to provide an extended arm 16 which acts as a cut off for the inner end of the oil pipe 12. This plunger rod extends through and operates in the packing box and has an enlarged cross sectionally rectangular portion L? which operates the opening 5 of the guide 3 and coacts with the said opening to prevent the plunger rod from turning.
The outer end of the plunger rod is screwthreaded as at 18 and a pair of washers 19 are spaced apart and adjustably held on the threaded portion of the plunger rod by means of nuts 20 and jam nuts 21. These washers form tappets. The piston rod 22 of the engine is provided with a tappet arm 23 which projects therefrom, is operated thereby and has an openingthrough which the plunger rod extends, this tappet arm being arranged between the 'tappet washers 19 so that the said tappet arm coacts'with sa1d tappet washers to impart reciprocating motion to the plunger rod from the-piston rod of the engineso that the plunger rod moves back and forth in the bore of the pump barrel 6. o
At each outstroke of the plunger rod the inner end of the oil pipe 12 is uncovered by the arm 16 of the plunger'rod so that oil passes from the oil cup into the bore 13 of the pump barrel and at each instroke of the plunger rod the said arm first cuts oif the oil pipe and the plunger rod acts to force the lubricant, against the steam pressure to the required part for use. The steam pressure against the underside of the arm 16 forces the latter against the upper side of the bore of the pump barrel and causes the plunger rod to efi'ectually cut oil the oil pipe and compensates for wear of the plunger rod. The stroke of the plunger rod can'be regulated by adjusting the tappet washers 19 by means of the nuts 20-21 as will be understood, so that the capacity of the lubricator can be varied as may be required.
I claim 1. In a lubricator of the class described, a barrel having a bore and an oil cup, an oilpipe leading from the cup to the bore of the barrel, a plunger rod operating in the bore of the barrel and having its inner end undercut and provided with an extended arm forming a cut off for the inner end of the oil pipe, means to operate said plunger rod, means to prevent the plunger rod from turning.
2. A lubricator of the class described,
comprising a base, a guide mounted directly operating in the guide and also operating in the bore of the pump barrel, the said plunger rod being undercut at its inner end and provided with an extended arm forming a cut oil for the inner end of the oil pipe, the said plunger rod and guide having coaoting means to prevent the plunger rod from turning, adjustable tappet elements on the plunger rod and a tappet arm for connection 10 with the piston rod of an engineand to operate between the said tappet elements to impart reciprocating motion to the plunger rod.
